Certified Flight Instructor FAQ
General QuestionsQ: What must I do to earn a flight instructor certificate? A: You must be at least 18 years old; read, speak, and understand the English language; hold a current Medical Certificate; hold either a Commercial or ATP pilot certificate with an instrument rating; pass an FAA Knowledge Exam on the Fundamentals of Instructing; pass an FAA Knowledge Exam on flight instruction subjects; receive flight instruction and an endorsement qualifying you for the CFI checkride; take and pass an oral and flight test on the subjects outlined in the CFI practical test standards.
Q: Do I need a Ground Instructor Certificate to teach ground school? A: No. Although a Basic or Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate is a nice credential to have, you do not need this certificate to teach ground school if you are already a flight instructor (CFI).
Q: What is the duration of a flight instructor certificate? A: You CFI Certificate must be renewed every 24 calendar months. This can be done by taking a Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC), by meeting the FAA's requirements for experience within the 2-year time frame, or by taking a checkride.
Q: Can I teach flight on a part-time basis? A: Yes. Flight instruction comes in many forms, providing flight instructors the opportunity to teach full-time or part-time. You can teach for a Part 61 or 141 school, or operate as a free-lance instructor.
